If every new parent spend an hour reading this book it would put us out of business. You may think it odd that we would welcome this with open arms, but we do. We both had children who didn't sleep and we understand the impact of sleep deprivation, not only on your little one (LO) but ultimately on the whole family.

Ask any parent what they want for LO and they will say they want a happy, healthy, confident child who has the opportunity to achieve their full potential. We probably don't need to tell you this but none of these things will be achieved without adequate sleep.

Unlike other so-called sleep trainers we're not going to promise a no-cry sleep solution or advocate controlled crying. How can we expect a teething baby to sleep? How can a tot who's had a nightmare go back to sleep without some reassurance? We are simply talking about optimising sleep patterns and that may not mean a perfect night every night.

In fact, "getting your head" around a newborn night waking for feeds is just one of the transitions we face when we become parents. Most of us expect this for a short while. However, if this continues for months or even years (yes - night waking can go on that long) the whole family suffers.

This book is designed to encourage good sleep habits and troubleshoot difficulties by nipping them in the bud. There is no mystery, trickery or skulduggery in teaching LO positive sleep patterns. It is simply about knowing what to do and expect during each developmental phase and following our gut feelings as parents. Gut feelings are what nature gave us and they are our most powerful parenting tool. The key is letting our gut feelings grow with our baby and knowing when to separate our own emotions from those of LO.
